Sports Premium grant expenditure report for parents

The government provides additional funding for primary schools to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport.

This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is allocated to primary schools on an annual basis.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

At Spring Cottage, we value the role of Physical Education in your child’s development. Our aim is to inspire a love of movement and a desire to be active.

Initially, our PE lessons focus on physical literacy; allowing children to understand their bodies, developing key skills such as coordination, balance and spatial awareness. This is furthered when children are encouraged to explore movement, tactics, self-expression within game situations.

We endeavour to give all children the opportunity to explore their various talents at school. This can be done in P.E. sessions, at our extra curricular clubs, playing for the school team or with leadership opportunities such as SCPS Sport Leader and the PEST squad.

The physical education that we provide is inclusive; giving all children the opportunity to improve regardless of their starting point.

Each class is allocated 2 hours of P.E. time every week. Additionally, we embrace the ethos of being an ‘Active School’. In line with the Chief Medical Officers Guidelines, this enables us to give children the opportunity to be active for at least 30 minutes a day.

Summary

  • To provide all students with two hours of timetabled Physical Education per week and provide extra-curricular opportunities in addition to this.
  • To provide all children with high quality teaching during Physical Education lessons.
  • Engage at least 50% of pupils in extracurricular sporting and physical activity.
  • Provide targeted provision for those least active young people in our school throughout the year.
  • Increase the number of competitive sporting fixtures for both boys and girls in a wide range of sports.
  • Build active links with local community sports clubs and leisure providers.
  • Engage pupils in becoming sports leaders across the school.
  • Provide intra-school competition throughout the year.
  • Retain the School Games mark Gold standard in 2023.

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.

Swimming

Our pupils participate in swimming lessons at Winifred Holtby Secondary school.

This currently takes place during the Summer term of Year 4. Through this programme of lessons, children are assessed against the National Curriculum programme of study relating to swimming and water safety. Children not meeting the requirements at the end of Year 4, repeat swimming lessons in Year 5 and Year 6 if required.

In 2022 70% of the children who left Spring Cottage to move to their chosen secondary schools could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over 25 metres in a range of strokes. In 2019 the figure was 96%.

In 2022 65% of the children who left Spring Cottage to move to their chosen secondary schools could self-rescue.

*The dip in swimming data in 2022 was mainly due to the closure of local pools and restrictions in place both nationally and locally on swimming pools due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

*Swimming was not completed in 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to the Covid-19 lockdowns and the closure of local pools.

Cycling

In addition to swimming, we also recognise that cycling is a valuable life skill for our children.

In Year 4 and 5, we use the ‘Bikeability’ programme which enables children to become road-worthy cyclists.
